Damsels In Defense (2021)
Sexual violence against women has been depicted all throughout art history. Within all of these portrayals, the women are overpowered through status, weapons, and the number of men. The once damsels in distress that were reaching out or trying to push away the perpetrator are now fighting back against rape culture. This photographic series takes depictions of rape from art history and places them into a contemporary perspective. The overall color schemes, lighting, and posing reference the original painting; now, the women are no longer shown as powerless. Using double exposure, the images show the gesture within the original image overlaid with the women fighting back, changing the narrative.
